She hated funeral masses. That would always be the case, but we must give the departed their homage and sense of tribute—of that she was certain—even as she was certain of how she did not wish to attend. It was not because she had any emotional connection to Sidney or Gabriella, but these ritual procedures were so identical; it reminded her of her loss. She knew she would fidget and not be right during the time she spent in the chapel. But she knew she must focus on the cause of their death, not on the death itself.

As she placed the well-worn black dress on, she had the oddest sense of wondering why she had even packed it. She did not intend to wear black on their trip; perhaps it was as a remembrance...a relic of her past that she clung to remember it, to show reverence to that time.

She also felt certain someone who had no reverence for life would attend the service. As all criminals do, one of those people was hiding behind a mask created very carefully and very credibly, and though she suspected many, she did not as yet suspect only one. Many people on board displayed enough idiosyncrasies to make them seem suspicious.
